Ethik Collective Winter 2022

Four SIP students created systems to assist female artisans in identifying their needs and Ethik Collective in securing funding to fulfill these needs.

At the start of the semester, the student team was tasked with helping Ethik Collective in their “capacity building” efforts. Capacity building is investing in the effectiveness and future sustainability of the organization.  When capacity building is successful, it strengthens an organization’s ability to fulfill its mission and enhances its ability to create positive outcomes.

To help Ethik better serve its existing partnerships and reach more artisan collaboratives, the students focused on streamlining Ethik’s grant application process. After extensive research, iteration, and evaluation, the students created a process by which artisans can identify gaps in their systems and Ethik can apply for grants to secure resources to address these gaps.

What used to be a lengthy and nebulous process is now a streamlined process, allowing Ethik to deepen its contributions and expand its reach.

  • People receiving information

    Information Intake

The artisans Ethik collaborate with often lack the resources necessary to fulfill large and consistent orders. For instance, they may lack permanent workshop spaces, upgraded crafting tools, or skills-based training. To create a process for artisans to identify their needs, the student interns created an information intake survey. They created the survey in multiple formats to ensure all artisan groups could successfully identify their needs, despite technological barriers.

  • Grand appliation

    Grant Application

Once artisans identify their needs, Ethik seeks to secure funding and resources to satisfy these needs. After employing best practices, creating multiple iterations, and receiving feedback from experts and artisans, the internship team created a streamlined grant application process. Using this updated process along with the information intake survey allows Ethik to apply for grants, secure funds, and meet artisan needs more efficiently.

  • Email

    Email Templates

Using a customer relationship management platform, the team created email templates to distribute the information intake surveys. The team scheduled the emails to be sent to each artisan group biannually. They also created an email outlining the grant application process to be sent after the completion of the information intake survey. Ultimately, systematizing these processes allows Ethik to collaborate with more artisan groups and help more women have consistent work and income.
